Topher is building a summer league opportunity throughout the Upper Cumberland that will focus on social team play. As of today, 5/22, Topher is still working on the specifics, but bare bones are here.
What is it? Just like little league baseball, we will have small tennis teams squaring off against each other in a fun way. We will form 6 person teams (3 guys, 3 girls) throughout the Upper Cumberland. Your team can be made of friends in your area or friends from a nearby city. If you can't fill out a 6 person team, Topher will try to help you combine with others to form one. You can also give your team a unique name! Just commit to being there for your team.
Who: 8 year olds up to 18 year olds. Beginners to Advanced. Our goal is that each athlete already be familiar with scoring. Divisions will be 18U, 14U, 12U, and 10U if we have enough participants.
Practices: Tuesdays and Thursdays in June and July in Sparta and McMinnville. Your teams can practice anywhere, anytime. But Topher will be offering free guided "Team Practices" (Clinic Format) for any who are willing to join us. Each practice will have a different singles or doubles strategy component taught.
Tuesdays in Sparta - Large Group Practice (tennis clinic format) for any athletes that can attend. 5:30pm for 12U & 10U and 7:00pm for 18U and 14U
Thursdays in McMinnville - Large Group Practice (tennis clinic format) for any athletes that can attend. 5:30pm for 12U & 10U and 7:00pm for 18U and 14U
Teams can practice under captain supervision at any other time.
Matches: We're looking at 5 Saturdays in June and July (except the TSSAA Dead Period at the beginning of July).
We are hoping to have matches throughout the Upper Cumberland - Sparta, McMinnville, Spencer, Cookeville, and Fairfield Glade. Topher is still making contact and working out the details.
Team Match Play will be 1 singles boys match, 1 singles girls match, 1 doubles boys match, and 1 doubles girls match. So, the best of four matches determines the winner. If there is a 2-2 tie, then we'll go to one mixed doubles (Fast4 format) to determine the winning team.
Pricing - We're trying to keep our cost for the league play under $80. We may be able to go lower, but that depends on participation. If you choose to go to the State Championships on July 21-23rd, then there will be an additional charge estimated about $40. We're really trying to keep things "at-cost" covering new tennis balls and t-shirts for individual teams. We want tennis to be accessible to everyone. More info to come soon.
