Spotify Playlist
A student athlete had a great suggestion with creating a Spotify Playlist for tennis practices and car rides. Since I have a premium account that filters out songs with explicit lyrics, we'll create it under my account. Seniors, you can add up to 5 songs each. All other players can add two songs each.  If you don't have Spotiify, then send me your song requests and I'll add them in. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2o6oClF1nhenrD17AT1gI2?si=64b82f7d6e9e472d&pt=7866a4495a0713156a36a5ba7acc65fe

Wheelchair Tournament Field Trip - Nov 13-16

  • SIGN UP: https://forms.gle/DZqtsFQCTKHe9UF4A

  • WHAT: The White County High School boys & girls tennis teams request approval for 15 students to travel for one weekend to serve in various volunteer capacities for the USTA Adult National Wheelchair Tennis Championship. We are requesting approval for participating students to miss one day of school (Friday, November 14th). This is the largest WheelChair tournament in the United States as part of the United States Tennis Association (USTA). Wheelchair tennis follows all the rules of traditional tennis except the athletes can let the ball bounce twice instead of the traditional single bounce. Watch a video clip of wheelchair tennis in the USA here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFhqYYVc_IU . We will serve primarily as ball boys/girls on court, refreshment monitors, court monitors, and as greeters for the tournament.

  • WHEN: Students will leave immediately after school on Thursday, November 13th at 4pm and return Sunday, November 16th at 8pm. The drive to McDonough, Georgia will take a little over 4 hours across 230 miles to the 10 tennis courts of Richard Craig Park. Students request prior approval to be absent from classes on Friday, November 15th. We will begin serving at 8am on Friday, November 15th at the tennis courts.

  • WHO:  We have been given special request volunteer opportunities by Mr. Harlon Matthews (Tournament Director) and Mrs. Lori Townsend (Volunteer Coordinator) for this tournament. This volunteer opportunity is intended to include up to 15 members of the high school tennis team, tennis team coaches, and team member parents. We would also like to extend that invitation to some of our more mature middle school tennis players if the 15 player limit is not reached. Coach Topher Wiles has confirmed being able to chaperone the volunteer opportunity with other tennis parents as potential.  Topher requires a 1:6 ratio of adults to students on overnight trips with high schoolers. We will obtain at least 2 more adult chaperones in addition to the tennis coaches in attendance.

  • WHERE: The 10 tennis courts of Richard Craig Park are located at address: 125 S. Zack Hinton Blvd, McDonough GA 30253.  Our team will sleep for free in separate boys/girls areas in the gymnasium at Richard Craig Park.  We will be given a key to the gym for the weekend to access the area and the showers. Click this link to view the location of the Richard Craig Park: https://maps.app.goo.gl/WLr8HfQq57jYjFnV7

  • WHY: Our vision for our tennis team athletes is to use on-court & off-court opportunities to develop our students into well-rounded teammates and young adults. We believe volunteer opportunities bring potential for growth in team relationship bonding and give valuable experience to the opportunities that national tennis provides. This is an opportunity for our team to grow closer together and to give back to the tennis community. It will also provide positive media for White County Athletics and Schools.

  • TRANSPORTATION: We will ask approved chaperones with minivans & large SUVS to transport students and donate the cost of their fuel on the trip, which will be two tanks of fuel. Parents have already said they are happy to drive and cover fuel costs for this opportunity. Students & Parents will fill out the transportation waiver that we have used in previous years for tennis matches and transportation plans will be communicated early and thoroughly to all parents/guardians of students.

  • HOW MUCH:  This volunteer trip will have minimal cost to the student and tennis budget, and zero cost to the school system.  Students bring $20 to cover fast food while traveling.

Vision: to grow a lifelong passion for the game of tennis and for teammates in a winning White County tennis program.

Core Values
Inclusiveness - We value inclusiveness and collaboration with and among all our players and parents because the best ideas, decisions, and experiences are the result of input from many rather than a few.
Excellence - We value excellence in all that we do, in every practice, match, and interaction. We are committed to exceeding our players’ expectations.
Innovation - We value innovative and creative approaches to all that we do so we can keep tennis play fresh, vibrant, and accessible to everyone on teams.
Discipline – We value discipline in academics, behavior, and physical training so that athletes can succeed in all areas of life.
Fun - We value fun because, ultimately, tennis is still a game to be enjoyed!

Goals for 2025-2026 Season

  • All athletes will complete the school year with no failing academic grades.

  • All athletes will demonstrate increased tennis ability from start to finish of the season.

  • Our teams will be ranked #1 going into the district tournament in April 2026.

  • Our program will raise at least $6000 in fund raising for future goals.

  • Our program will bring notable encouragement to the community through news media & good citizenship.

Team Descriptions
Varsity Team Description – Our varsity tennis team will be designated by Feb 23rd, 2026, and be comprised of the top 5 tennis athletes in both the boys and the girls tennis teams. The goal of this team is to represent the best tennis athletes in our community and win matches against other school teams. This team will be established in ranking according to a combination of challenge match results and coaches’ determination. This team will be scheduled to play at least 16 matches in the regular season and will represent our school at all district matches and the district tournament.  Throughout the season, players may play junior varsity matches to gain more experience or due to challenge rankings.
Junior Varsity Team Description – Our junior varsity tennis team will be designated by Feb 23rd, 2026, and be comprised of remaining tennis athletes who are developing their game into top level tennis in White County.  The goal of this team is to gain match play experience and to support the varsity team whenever needed. This team will be established in ranking according to a combination of challenge match results and coaches’ determination. This team will be scheduled to play at least 7 non-district matches in the regular season and will be expected to be present at district matches even if not playing.  Throughout the season, players may play varsity matches if they challenge up to be on the varsity team or if a coach deems necessary.

Preseason Practice Dates & Expectations
Optional pre-season practices will be held on Mondays and Thursdays at White County High School from 3:30pm – 5pm from 10/20/24 to 1/30/25. Mondays are intended for higher level players and will focus on strategy and match play situations.  Thursdays are intended for less experienced players and will focus on stroke production and technique. Tuesdays will be intended for Topher to give personal instruction to individuals. We expect students to make every effort to attend one practice a week if not already participating in a sport.  During practices, tennis shoes must be worn. The athlete may choose appropriate tennis apparel.

Regular Season Dates & Matches
We intend to schedule at least 16 Varsity matches and 7 JV matches between Feb 23rd  and April 22nd.  We hope to include 2 weekend team tournaments. Practices will be scheduled 3 days a week with Fridays being reserved for challenge matches or rainout makeups. Our goal is to avoid matches or practice on Wednesdays. Friday challenge matches are scheduled between 3:30pm-5:00pm.
