Sparta Tennis Shows Grit in Clash with State Powerhouse Cookeville

Cookeville, TN— A wise man said that iron sharpens iron, and the White County Warriors and Warriorettes put that proverb to the test Monday night. Facing off against the Cookeville Cavaliers—a program that has notched state postseason appearances nearly every year for the last decade—the Sparta squads displayed the kind of sportsmanship and tenacity that transcends a scoreboard.

The atmosphere at the Warrior Courts took on a special tone midway through the evening. As a light afternoon drizzle cleared, a vibrant rainbow arched over the matches, bringing a collective smile to the courts. For many in attendance, it served as a beautiful reminder of the Creator’s goodness, providing a moment of peace and perspective amidst the heat of competition.

While the final tallies favored the larger 2A school, the primary mission for 1AWhite County was growth. With the district postseason just two weeks away and a highly anticipated entrance into Regions looming in three weeks, this match served as the ultimate training ground for the Warriors and Warriorettes.

Goff Grabs Resilient Victory for Warriorettes

The Warriorettes faced a formidable Cavaliers lineup, but the night was illuminated by a standout performance at the #6 singles line. Ainslee Goffprovided the varsity highlight of the evening, battling back from an early deficit to secure a gritty 8-6 victory.

Goff relied on a steady service game to stay within striking distance early on, but it was her return game that eventually dismantled her opponent’s momentum. While her opponent brought heavy hitting to the court, Goff countered with a superior "long-rally" strategy, using variety and patience to force errors.

The success continued into the Junior Varsity ranks, where Victoria Davis and Avi Rose dominated their doubles match with a 6-3 win. Davis anchored the baseline with high, looping lobs, while Rose patrolled the net, aggressively putting away volleys and smashes. Several other pairings nearly tipped the scales in Sparta’s favor, including a narrow 6-8 loss by the #1 doubles team of Lorelei Bouldin and Sadie Benningfield, and an "extra innings" 7-9 battle from Emmie Benningfield and Claire Hawkins.

Warriors Find Success in the Details

On the boys’ side, the Warriors went up against a Cookeville team that reached the state semifinals in both 2024 and 2025. Despite the uphill battle, the Sparta boys showed remarkable progress in their tactical approach.

Top seeds John Durfee and Ethan Wiles turned in the most competitive singles performances of the night, taking three and two games off their state-level opponents, respectively. In doubles action, Ben Brogden and Solomon Hawkins showed great chemistry, fighting for every point in an 8-game pro-set.

The coaching staff noted that the frequency of deuce games and the length of rallies have increased significantly compared to previous years. More importantly, the Warriors demonstrated the ability to identify opponent weaknesses and pivot their strategies mid-match—a skill that will be vital as the postseason approaches.

Looking Ahead: Senior Night

The Warriors and Warriorettes left the courts with their heads held high, proud to represent the Sparta colors. They now turn their attention to a celebration of their veteran leaders.

White County will host Stone Memorial High School for Senior Night this Thursday, April 16th. The celebration and matches are scheduled to begin at 3:45 PM at the Warrior Courts. The community is encouraged to come out and support these athletes as they finalize their preparations for the road to post-season play.
