Both the ladies' and the men's tennis teams are enjoying winning team season records so far in 2023. With four matches remaining, the Warriorettes are 4-3 with and the Warriors are 5-2 as team matches are recorded. Our season team match scores are determined by winning at least 5 out of 9 individual matches comprised of 6 singles and 3 doubles matches.

Since our last newspaper report from scores on 4/6, we've battled matches against Cookeville (4/11), Cumberland County (4/13), and Watertown (4/17).

Cookeville (AWAY) (4/11)

Our lone Varsity point was a huge bright spot in an otherwise difficult match. Cookeville has built a deep and dependable program with experienced players in every spot. Our girls team was swept in a 0-9 loss, and our men lost 1-8. Our sole victory however was a major morale boost as sophomore #1 Gabriel Wiles kept solid control in his 8-3 victory against the Cavalier #1. All in attendance agreed that Wiles played with more poise, purpose, and passion in this match than any we've seen so far this season. The stands were packed with people watching this match alone as the #1 seed often carries the pride of the team and the pressure that comes with being the top school representative more than any other player. This resounding win may well prove to be the single greatest individual victory of the season for Wiles in his sophomore season.

Cumberland County (AWAY) (4/13)

Our athletes travelled well in their second away match of the week. Our closest matches came from Nia Powers, Kate Frasier, and the doubles combination of Lorelei Bouldin/Brianna Stone who all held firm to give our ladies a clean sweep on the road. Especially noteworthy was Powers who put together a mid-match rally to come from behind for the win showing that never-give-up spirit we've come to expect from this senior leader on the team. Our fellas had a much easier match-up against Cumberland County as they were only able to field a team with 2 athletes to match up against our full roster of 10 athletes. Our Warriors won 3 matches by a margin of 24-1 games.

Watertown (HOME) (4/17)

This first of 3 matches this week displayed the best/closest matchup of the season for both teams. At 9:30pm we were still playing varsity doubles match showing just how deep the matches progressed in their scorelines. Winning 2/3 tiebreaks shows the Warriors with a slight edge in the high pressure points of tennis. Our most dominant singles matches came from Nia Powers, Kate Frasier, Max Simmons, and Logan Dickerson. In each match, this coach believes our athletes displayed their best performances of the season yet keeping a tight reign on control in each of the matchups. In doubles, our top two ladies doubles provided definite points for the team seeing dominate net performances from Nia Powers, Kate Frasier, Marian Swindell, and Lilly Colwell. A pivotal point for the ladies win was the last point of the close match between Watertown #5 seed and our Warriorette, Lorelei Bouldin. As a freshman, Lorelei has developed one of the most punishing serves on the team. She held off a late match surge from her opponent with several aces, with the last point being a slicing ace up the "T" from the AD side of court punctuating the final point with an exclamation point giving the Warriorettes the go-ahead to 3-2 in the top 5 singles matchups. Our biggest surprise of the night was Logan Dickerson, who toppled his more experienced opponent 8-1 in the most lopsided score of the night. Dickerson's superior speed, hustle, and consistency easily overcame his opponent's power game giving us all a big smile as we witnessed this rookie's rise in tennis IQ over the last couple of months. We were extremely proud of the fight that all our Warriorettes and Warriors displayed on courts 1-4 tonight.
