WC - Girls Shutout and Guys Battle in Dekalb

Writer: Topher WilesTopher Wiles

Yesterday our high school tennis teams made the coaching staff proud. Our young program performed exceptionally against a deeper, older, and more resourced Dekalb County team. White County showed that we can not only hang with them, but that we can fight through gritty matches for some wins.

The Upper Cumberland district match scores are determined by 9 total match points in both the girls and boys teams; 6 singles matches and 3 doubles matches. This is different from the district tournament and many other districts in the state using a 5 singles and 2 doubles match scoring system. So for our girls and boys teams to win in regular season matches, our individual teams must win a minimum of 5 out of 9 matches.

Ladies News - Last night at DeKalb County, our girls tennis team won by a score of 9-0. We are proud of our growing team leading the shutout by #1 seed Nia Powers (12th). One of our proudest moments in the girls line-up was from 2nd seed Marian Swindell (10th), who was down 0-5 in her match before clawing her way back to a 9-8(7-5) victory in the tiebreaker, consolidating a perfect match score for the girls tennis team shutting out DeKalb County. Here are the other scores for the ladies for this proud road victory in the cold.

Girl's Singles

1. Nia Powers - Win - 8-1

2. Marian Swindell - Win 9-8(7-5)

3. Kate Frasier - Win - 8-4

4. Lilly Colwell - Win - 8-1

5. Lorelei Bouldin - Win - 8-1

6. Brianna Stone - Win - 8-3

7. Catherine Gottlied - Win - 5-0 (opponent retired)

8. Alexis Lewis, Amber Mercado, Abbey Moore, and Madalyn Scott all played exhibition mini matches with great success. Autumn Birdwell was present in support.

Girl's Doubles

1. Powers/Frasier - Win - 8-6

2. Swindell/Colwell - Win - 8-0

3. Bouldin/Stone - Win - 8-2

Boys News - The boys showed well narrowing missing the victory by a score of 3-6. There were several matches that could go either way, with a homecourt advantage proving fruitful for DeKalb in multiple matches. We are extremely proud of Noah Gately (11th), who posted close wins in both the doubles and singles score lines. Also in doubles, Wiles/Simmons dominated in a tiebreak 7-1.

Boys Singles

1. Gabriel Wiles - Loss - 5-8

2. Noah Gately - Win - 8-6

3. Max Simmons - Loss - 3-8

4. Jack Bouldin - Loss - 6-8

5. John Durfee - Loss - 7-9

6. Drew Jett - Loss - 0-8

Boys Doubles

1. Gately/Bouldin - Win - 8-6

2. Wiles/Simmons - Win - 9-8(7-1)

We look forward to the growth of this tennis program and we look forward to battling on the courts against Cannon County (Woodbury) on Friday at 4pm at White County High School.
