2024-25 Tennis Tryout Results

Hello tennis friends,

We're excited for the upcoming tennis season. We had a marvelously high turnout for this season's tryouts, showing the growing popularity of racquet sports among our community.  The tryout process can be one of the most challenging moments of the season for coaching staff and athletes.  We realize that it is a moment when joys are realized and disappointments arise. Our goal is not to disappoint, but due to limited tennis court resources and our need to limit the number on the team, some will be disappointed when a name is not included on the list. Personally, I'm grateful for coaches Amy Hawkins and Nancy Benningfield who go above and beyond their responsibilities to facilitate fair tryouts for each and every athlete.

Athletes, if you find your name not on the list, you can contact me to discuss how you can improve your tryout performance for the future. If you are interested in tennis and did not make the team this season, please consider trying out again for the 2025-2026 season. I'm happy to recommend online resources, several Upper Cumberland tennis instructors, and tennis summer camps that will keep you growing so that you can show your best at tryouts.  I will be glad to talk with individuals about their strengths and weaknesses as shown in our assessment.  Our assessment was based on the following metrics:

  • Volley Technique

  • Forehand Technique

  • Backhand Technique

  • Serve Technique

  • Match Play Demonstration (The athlete played a match to demonstrate understanding of scoring, etiquette, sportsmanship, and attitude.)

  • Coachability (Willingness to pay attention to direction, follow directions, and fulfill coaches' expectations on the court and as a student.)

  • Content Knowledge Test (A written test covering the basics of scoring and court areas/lines.)

  • Eligibility Years (The number of years a player is eligible to play in the program.)

Please reach out if you have questions or concerns. Tennis begins with love and is set in motion with service. We love all of you athletes who attended tryouts and are happy to serve you the best we can.

Grace and peace,

Topher Wiles
